Is hearing loss affecting your quality of life? Rest assured we can help you.
Hearing Loss:
‘In the UK, 1 in 5 adults are deaf or hard of hearing’ (RNID 2021)
‘Around 40% of people over fifty in the UK suffer from hearing loss’ (2019)
Our hearing is precious and like the rest of our faculties, we take it for granted. Losing our hearing gradually as we age is incredibly common; this condition is known as Presbycusis.
Hearing loss falls within three main categories:
Conductive
This involves the outer or middle ear, whereby the ‘conduction’ of sound waves becomes affected. Common causes are wax occlusion, middle ear fluid or ‘glue ear,’ perforation of the eardrum and fixation of the middle ear bones called Otosclerosis.
Sensorineural
This is where the inner working of the ear becomes impaired due to such causes as progressive, age related decline or noise exposure. The tiny hairs within the inner ear and surrounding nerves become damaged or degenerate, affecting the transmission of sound and in turn causing hearing impairment.
Mixed
Mixed hearing loss is a combination of both conductive and sensorineural loss caused by a combination of factors.
Hearing aids
In most cases, permanent hearing loss is addressed and improved significantly by digital hearing aids.
All hearing aid options come with:
- Free 5 year extended warranty
- 60 day money back guarantee
- Unlimited aftercare
Earwax
Earwax also known as cerumen is a substance secreted within the outer ear canal. It’s valuable properties include lubrication and protection against foreign bodies and some forms of bacteria. Earwax is largely self-cleaning and often migrates out of the ear on its own. However, the ear can produce an excess of wax and skin which can become impacted and troublesome; further exacerbated by the use of cotton buds!
Treatment options include:
Endoscopic Microsuction
Microsuction is now considered the gold standard in wax removal, surpassing antiquated methods such as irrigation. A quiet but effective suction device and sterile probe is used to gently, safely and hygienically remove troublesome earwax.
Endoscopic Instrumentation
Alternative tools are sometimes used to remove harder or drier pieces of wax or skin, these include:
- Jobson Horne probe
- St Bartholomew’s Ear hook
- Crocodile forceps
Tinnitus
Tinnitus can be troublesome and intrusive. There are treatment options to help manage your symptoms.
“Tinnitus is the perception of noises in the head and/or ear which have no external source.” British Tinnitus Association, 2019
Tinnitus is an umbrella term for perceiving sounds in the ears or head that only you can hear. It can be described as a multitude of sounds including ringing, buzzing, humming, hissing and even pulsing. The sensation can be constant or intermittent and it can vary in volume and intensity.
Tinnitus can be related to underlying health conditions or commonly triggered by specific events such as, trauma, stress, illness, bereavement or noise exposure. Hearing loss is often another common reason for suddenly becoming aware of your Tinnitus. Many people live comfortably with the condition, however Tinnitus can become intrusive and all consuming.
Rest assured, at Harmony Hearing Solutions, there are treatment options available to help manage and alleviate your Tinnitus symptoms.
A diagnostic hearing assessment is fundamental in establishing the effectiveness of the hearing pathway and the health of the ears. The results of the hearing assessment help determine which management options you may require, these include:
- Tinnitus Retraining Therapy
- Hearing aids
- White noise generator
